Cheers to Farming!
They’re a big part of Southern life.
They’re also kind of a central California thing.
And when I spent a summer in Kenya in high school, I lived and worked on a farm.
Hence, farming has a special place in my heart.
Today, we visited the only true farm on Lana`i. Bennie’s Farm is owned and run by Bennie Richardson, who plays the business partner role and stays pretty under the radar, and Alberta De Jetley, who has invested the last ten years of her life in every seed, every bit of soil, and every sprout. Alberta took us on a tour of her farm, cutting plants for us to take home as we walked. The price for our loot? Three hours of helping out on the farm next week. It was a good trade.
I have a LOT of respect for anyone who takes on the challenge of growing things. I watched a TED talk recently in which a man said “Growing your own food is like printing your own money.” And I firmly believe that. I have my own small herb garden in my backyard, along with a couple different tomato plants and a lemon tree. My dream is to have my own real garden when I own a house. The pride of growing your own food makes it taste better and saves you money. Gardening is also a great way to teach patience, hope, investment, and responsibility. Or if you’re me, a great way to learn those things.
